Swedish Firesteel*

This is a very reliable way to get a fire quickly. One of these should be part of every survival kit.

I am big fan of these for starting fires in the field. Under a lot of conditions matches just aren't going to work, but if you can throw a spark in to a Vaseline soaked cotton ball, or similar material you can get a fire going in short order.

Liabilities

  • Has a bit of a learning curve.
  • Requires good tinder.

Interesting. How does this compare to the classic magnesium firestarter?

It is basically the same as the sparking surface, but is much lighter weight. You are expected to have tinder - so there is none of that tedious shaving of magnesium.
