I have been using this unit for more than 4 years. It is still a good device in a great form factor, but the feature set is showing it's age.
Currently background checks are required for all firearms sold by licensed dealers. Private transfers are not currently part of this system.
1. This is a 'blacklist' system, so it only contains a list of prohibited persons.
2. The blacklist is only as good as the most current data that is fed into it.
3. Data errors in the blacklist that misidentify people are effectively denying the law abiding citizens access to firearms.
4. Prohibited persons bypass the background checks with either a 'straw purchase', stealing their firearms, or buying guns from illegal dealers.
5. From 1994 to 2004 there were 61,632,000 NICS checks run and 1,228,000 rejections (about 2%)
6. The cost of the system is about $140,000,000 per year.
Rustmeister writes on a range of topics and his posts are usually informative, funny, or both. I read him for the gun related posts, but he also writes about cars, motorcycles, and Cthulhu.
