Expediency vs. Rights

Public safety trumps outdated, irrelevant Second Amendment

Mr. Gaillard offers us a very dangerous precedent in the very title of his piece. The Constitution is a national mission statement. It maps out how the country is to be governed, and protects the citizens from their excesses. If expediency trumps your rights as Gaillard suggests, then he would welcome a very expedient dictatorship.

There is no public safety issue as Gaillard suggests. More people are killed by falls or accidental poisoning than are murdered with firearms. Repealing the 2nd amendment and banning firearms is not going to disarm the criminals who have no regard for the law (that is why we call them criminals.)

Idiots will debate the value of a militia made up of citizens with a hodgepodge of small arms in the age of precision guided weapons and massive national armies. What the idiots fail to realize is that an armed populace can only be ruled by it's consent. Being able to destroy the populace is not the same thing as being able to govern it.
