Jogger Carry

Delica and Pepperspray

This is a minimum amount of equipment. A small canister of pepper spray, and a spyderco delica.

I prefer the flip-top safety mechanism on my pepper spray, because it is easer to activate reliably and produces less fumbling under stress.

I advocate smaller knives like the delica because they are generally legal in most jurisdictions and still very effective defensive tools.

Awareness is ultimately the first line of defense, and if you are already running you should probably continue to do so.

As one who tried jogging with a pistol, I can only recommend not doing it. Having tried both a belly band (which was quite comfortable in non-running situations) and a vest, neither one works worth a darn. It seems impossible to secure a pistol in such a way that it will not bounce around and still not be constricting. (plus, having carried a revolver, the rattle of the cartridges in the chamber is difficult to disguise and downright irritating in some circumstances) In addition to being uncomfortable, a pistol would be, at best, difficult to use. Try aiming in on something when you're breathing heavy after a hard run. As suggested, the best advice by far is to just keep running. Only faster.

That's a good set of minimal equipment. I might add a flashlight. But then again, I'd add a gun.

Avoidance and retreat are always preferrable when they can be done and maintain your safety. That's a given. There are some threats that simply cannot be avoided and for which getting close with a knife or spraying down will be inadvisable.

Think of a Keltec P3AT or Ruger LCP. Sure, it's .380 ACP but it's better than getting up close and personal. They're small, light, and no cylinder shake.

As with any defense method, pistols take training and practice. Especially the sub compact pistols. Put the pistol on the shooting bay shelf pointing down range. run back and forth or jog in place for awhile. Come back to the bay, safely grip the pistol and shoot. You'll find you have to concentrate but it can be done. Once you try it and prepare yourself, you'll be confident that you COULD do it if you HAVE to.
