Great post! This is what is taught where I trained. I do agree that it is always best to get out first, if at all possible.

[...] Mental Conditioning for Self Defense by Mostly Genius Many of the “Survivor Mindset” and “Warrior Mindset” proponents talk about mental attributes as if they were bolt-on parts and once fully kitted out you will be ready. I would argue that it is a little more complicated than that. [...]

John:
I think you have missed the point of the post. Criminal and civil liability are concerns and having appropriate responses are the only protection for that.
<blockquote>
Suddenly you’re under attack! So you push him into traffic, and he gets killed. But what if you’ve misunderstood the situation and you’ve just killed a guy without a reason that will stand up in court?
</blockquote>

Taken at face value: You are screwed. You are going to have to explain to me how I can have a situation where I am being attacked, but I don't understand the situation and I have no justification for self-defense?

I like these ideas. I'm not sure how implementable they are. I think that a lot of us have a mental conditioning built in to avoid doing things that would result in prosecution or lawsuits.

This kind of conditioning is hard to overcome, because these situations involve making potentially life-changing decisions in a few seconds.

But yes, if it's possible to quickly make the decision that one is in a true emergency, then it's important to switch off the rules that cease to be important.
