"...the target audience for this type of advice is usually women who live in large cities, which coincidentally, often have laws in place to discourage armed self-defense."

Very true,and very unfortunate.

Oh,and the Remco vs Orlando fight is an outstanding example WT! That still remains one of my favorite fights of all time.

Me too. The expression on Remco's face when he realizes Orlando is out cold cracks me up.

There were a lot of elbows, knees and stomps to downed opponents in those early days, those were just the first three that immediately came to mind. I just remembered another couple of my favorites: Pat Smith vs. Scott “Ninja” Morris and Johnny Rhodes vs. Fred “Fetal Position” Ettish (both in UFC 2).

You can see the fixing principle that MG is talking about very clearly in the Smith vs. Morris fight, also. Scott Morris got demolished so badly that it prompted the UFC to institute new rules, as was mentioned.

...much of what I have read seems to have promoted improvised weapons as replacements for actual ones...We improvise only when we are forced to deviate from our plan.

I agree 100%, however, the target audience for this type of advice is usually women who live in large cities, which coincidentally, often have laws in place to discourage armed self-defense.

As one who has,in the past, been responsible for the removal of the unruly or unwanted, the "fixed objects" portion gave me flashbacks and made me laugh a bit....Ahh...the good old days indeed...

What you don’t see in MMA is kicks, stomps, and elbows against downed opponents - these techniques are disallowed in the rules because of the frequency of serious injury.

Ahh... the good old days...

Gerard Gordeau vs Teila Tuli (UFC1) (kick to the face of a downed opponent) 0:30

Kevin Rosier vs Zane Frazier (UFC1) (stomping a downed opponent) 4:18

Remco Pardoel vs Orlando Weit (UFC2) (pin and elbows to the head) 1:29
