British Gun Control Failure

Posted by – November 25, 2008

New Statesman – Britain’s converted gun problem

The blanket ban on handguns following the massacre of 16 schoolchildren in Dunblane in March 1996 has prevented similar mass killings from legally-owned pistols such as those witnessed in US, Germany and Finland. But in the meantime street gun crime has risen inexorably.

Last year, there were nearly 10,000 firearms offences in England and Wales, a third higher than in 1998 with 566 people fatally or seriously injured.

There is no news here, the restrictions are useless, the criminals are still arming themselves and crime is still rising despite the gun bans. New gun control measures are on the horizon for the US, but believe they will meet with far less compliance than they would in other countries. The more behavior you criminalize the more criminals you create.

No Knock Warrants and Drug Raids

The Agitator » Blog Archive » It Isn’t About No-Knocks. It’s About Home Invasions.

The cops never raid the Korbe home in the first place. They approach Robert Korbe at work, or as he’s about to enter or exit his house.

This would be the use of routine police work in place of a SWAT raid. Balko is spot on in this commentary. The only argument against arrests outside of the place where the evidence is supposed to be stored is that the evidence might be destroyed by an accomplice.

The no-knock warrant flies in the face of modern CQB doctrine. You only conduct an entry that requires a highly discretionary application of force when there is something inside worth risking the lives of all involved. A SWAT officer might willingly die to save a child that has be kidnapped, but I don’t know any that would be willing to lay down their life to seize a small drug stash or to arrest a street level dealer.

Even if an accomplice flushes the drugs, isn’t that the fastest way of getting the drugs off of the street?

Battling violence one greeting card at a time.

Youths battle gun violence | The Detroit News | detnews.com

Can we agree that signing a pledge or a greeting card really isn’t “battling” anything? This is another school time-waster. I am certain that the on-going problems with youth street crime and violence isn’t going to be solved with a soft-headed feel good campaign.

Stupid Gun Modifications: Finger-Grip Base Plates

Posted by – November 25, 2008

grip_extension If you are carrying a sub-compact gun, presumably it is because a compact or full size gun is too large for your application. Adding a finger-grip base plate will in crease the size of the pistol in the most difficult dimension to conceal: the grip length. Adding a base plate to a Glock-26 gets you a Glock-19 with a shorter barrel and sight radius AND lower ammunition capacity.

Probably one of the smarter gun modifications I have seen was a Glock-17 with a grip cut down to Glock-26 size and carried with a standard Glock-26 magazine, and Glock-17 reload. This gives the concealabilty of the smaller gun, but the accuracy of the full size.
