D.C. Police Use E-Mail, Text Message Alerts to Combat Crime

So they can issue an SMS description of the criminal hours after the crime and citizens can call in. This sounds good until you think about the short length of SMS messages. That grant money could have been better spent.

    In June of this year, Louisville,KY started up an SMS tip line. Within two months they had received over a 1000 prank messages about "Billy bringing a bomb to school" and the like. A waste of money is right. Not to mention the ongoing costs to the departments/cities once the money has been completely absorbed. I agree,it could be better spent elsewhere.
